Charles Ferris


 

Charles has been a Councillor since 2008, representing Caerleon between 2008 - 2012, and Allt-yr-yn since 2012. He was re-elected to office again in May 2017. Charles was raised in Newport and his parents ran a family business in Newport City Centre, which he then ran for 40 years.

During this time Charles has been the Deputy Chair of the Licensing Committee, and is currently the Chair of the Democratic Services Committee, and a member of the Board of Newport Transport.

Charles has been the President of Newport Chamber of Trade, twice past President of the Rotary Club of Newport - being awarded the 'Paul Harris Fellowship' for his services to this well respected charity. Charles has also been the Chairman of the Gwent Alcoholic & Drugs Project, the Vicars Warden of St. Marks Church and he is also a licensed Eucharistic Minister based at St. Marks, Gold Tops, Newport.

Charles is involved with the Civic Society of Newport and founded the campaign to save 'The Newport Medieval Ship', for which Charles is the current Patron of the Friends of Newport Ship, and continues to raise funds for the ship's preservation. Charles was also active in taking aid to the former Yugoslavia at the time of the civil war, and subsequently to Belarus following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster - having been on over 25 convoys, carrying over 100 tons of aid.

In 2015 Charles succeeded in finding sponsorship from various Newport businesses and organisations - to refurbish the monument to commemorate the sacrifices made by the Monmouthshire Regiment in the Great War. Also in 2015, Charles was awarded 'Volunteer of the Year' by the Association of Voluntary Organisations.
