Council Leader Chauffeur ScandalCity News, Page of Shame
Newport Council spent £81,415 on ‘Chauffeur driven Cars’ with Leader Debbie Wilcox spending £11,397.
Newport’s Council Leader has come under ‘heavy criticism’ after taking - 114 trips - in chauffeur driven cars from May 2016 to December 2018. The cost to the taxpayer equated to £11,397.
A freedom of information request submitted by the Newport East Conservative Association revealed £81,415 was spent (in total) on chauffeur driven cars from May 2016 to December 2018. Most of this was attributed to the Mayor.
ONLY THE CONSERVATIVES WILL DELIVER SENSIBLE SPENDING!
Deputy Chairman of the Newport East Conservative Association, Cllr Ray Mogford said “Only 5 months ago £55,850 was wasted on a Democracy Conference, which equated to a £500 spend per head for attendees. Now we learn £81,425 has been spent on chauffeur driven cars with £11,397 relating to Council Leader Debbie Wilcox.”
Cllr Mogford added “Monmouthshire Council use a Ford Mondeo as a ‘pool car’ for it’s councillors, running at 1/5th of Newport’s expenditure. During the difficult years of austerity from 2014 onwards, is it morally right for our Council Leader to be using Chauffeur driven cars?”
Wales Cordinator for the UK Taxpayers’ Alliance Joshua Chohan has told us:- “Newport residents are being clobbered with Council Tax rises of 5.95% this year and 4.8% last year. Every penny spent should go on front line services. The sheer arrogance of the Leader on spending £11,397 on chauffeur driven cars is shocking. Newport Council is not working for the people of Newport.”
YET MORE EVIDENCE OF CHAMPAGNE SOCIALISM!
South East Wales Welsh Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar said “It is unbelievable that Newport City Council should spend this money on chauffeur driven cars at a time when hard pressed families in the City face an increase of nearly 6% in their council tax bills due to the poor settlement received from the Welsh Labour Government.”
Mr Asghar added “At a time of financial stringency, all local authorities have a duty to get best value for money and ensure the maximum amount is delivered for frontline public services.”
St.Julians Campaigner Michael Enea said “The Leader is entitled to use a car and has done nothing wrong from a legal perspective. What is in question is whether, it is morally right to have used the car so much during a time of austerity? This is a matter of principles whereby leading by example.”

*Costs are not accounted separately for use of the civic cars by the Leader. The Leader used the cars 114 times since May 2016, against a total of 722 trips for the Mayoralty during that time. This equates to 14% of all trips with percentage costs broken down to £3649 between 2016 to 2017. Then £4431 in 2017/18 and £3317 in 2018/19. A total of £11,397 is the overall equated figure.
