UPROAR AT £1,000 A HEAD “DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE“
A Newport Councillor says she is outraged at the cost of an event organised by the local authority.
Councillor Joan Watkins asked a formal question about the cost of the Tomorrow’s Democracy Conference which was organised by Newport City Council that took place on 5th November. Cllr Watkins who attended the event couldn’t believe the cost at £55,850 and the fact there were no other sponsors.
“ I am outraged by the cost of this, we have been told there is no money in the pot and we couldn’t find £20,000 to keep some public toilets open, including
Caerleon which I represent, and yet there is money for this. I reckon there were a maximum of 60 people there 10 of which were Labour Councillors.
If you take away them then you are looking at over £1,000’s a head. I despair!
NEWPORT COUNCIL SPENDING EVEN MORE TAX PAYERS CASH!
Councillor Matthew Evans Leader of the Conservative Group on Newport City Council added “ I gather most of the speakers were University academics or representatives from Think Tanks like Paul Mason Momentum Member spouting a lot of left wing ideology. They could have given members of the public an opportunity to ask questions to Cabinet Members in the Council Chamber at next to no cost; that would have been real democracy. It’s scandalous.
