Leader's Report June 2018

The good the bad and the ugly.

Firstly the good news ... I submitted a motion to Council urging the Welsh Government to act as a matter of urgency to restore the Ebbw Vale to Newport rail link. This was seconded by the Leader of Council Cllr Debbie Wilcox, and had unanimous support from all political parties. Sometimes you have to act in the best interests of the city and put party politics aside. I raised this issue back in 2002 and still nothing has happened, but hopefully this will increase the pressure to act and the South Wales Argus have agreed to back the campaign.

Sadly the same can’t be said about Economic Development and the Council’s Masterplan .... the bad news. Woefully short on ambition the consultation received a few dozen responses and with Premier Inn pulling out of the city for the second time and the Fear Group putting their business to one side, we really must try harder to encourage quality developments.

Needless to say Newport Conservatives will keep applying pressure on the Labour Council to fully address these serious issues.

The ugly... and I have resisted the temptation to talk about the Dragons rugby season, but instead focus on a response I received from a question to the Council Leader. The Welsh Labour Government are getting Cardiff to consult on introducing congestion charges and parking levies which would essentially double the charge for two hours parking. I asked the Leader of the Council if she would rule this out in Newport because of the damage it would do to the city centre. Remarkably she would not rule it out, even though such a move would have a devastating impact on businesses in the city. The only people smiling would be the retailers in Cwmbran and that’s not funny.

Finally we are continuing to apply pressure on the Council to do something about our Indoor Market. On recent visits I have been encouraged by the new Chair of the Traders, and Committee who have been very proactive in organising events like the popular flea market every Wednesday. They need and deserve support and action from your Labour Council who are happy to take credit but never blame.

Yet another example of being let down by Labour.

Cllr Matthew Evans is the Leader of the Opposition for Newport Conservatives at Newport City Council.
