Where are our Elected Councillors?
Serious questions are being raised after it has been revealed there have been no Community Ward Meetings in Beechwood for 3 & 1/2 years.
Beechwood Resident Lee Holmes said “I made enquiries as to when the next Community Ward Meeting is and I was told there isn’t one planned. I found out
the last one was on the 15th October 2014. I’m absolutely astonished, shocked and appalled to be honest”.
Mr Holmes added “These meetings are meant to be a way for the Council, elected Councillors and the Police to engage directly with local residents. In the
last 3 years, the Beaufort Centre playscheme was axed, numerous potholes line our roads, our local school fell into ‘Special Measures’, nuisance off-road
motorbikes are a problem and the community pub could be demolished. There have been issues that needed discussing in Beechwood, yet no Ward Meetings?
Where are our Councillors? I’m really not happy”.
St.Julians Campaigner Marie Jermyn said “There is no legal requirement on having a Community Ward Meeting, however it is desirable and common practice
to do them. For example, Caerleon and Rogerstone both have Ward Meetings every 4 to 6 months. St.Julians now hold regular Ward Meetings and the last
one was well attended. Some Councillors elsewhere even run monthly drop-in surgeries for residents”.
LABOUR COUNCILLORS ARE FAILING RESIDENTS
Fellow Conservative Campaigner Vikky Howells-Cook said “The Labour three Councillors in Beechwood are paid a combined salary of £39,600, which equates
to almost £200,000 over a 5 year elected term.... and there’s no Community Ward Meetings?”.
INEFFECTIVE COUNCILLORS BEING PAID TO DO NOTHING
Newport Campaigner Michael Enea said “3 & 1/2 years and no Ward Meetings booked in for the future? I’m just speechless from the shock”.
The Labour led Newport City Council do not appear to list Community Ward Meetings on their website. Other Councils take them very seriously. For example,
Leicester Council state “Our Community Ward Meetings take place every quarter, with the intention of bringing the Council and the communities within
our Wards closer together. The meetings give residents the opportunity to work with us, and other agencies such as the Police and NHS, to identify
local issues and improve their neighbourhoods. All Ward residents are welcome to attend”.
Newport Conservatives feel it is very important to bring this issue to the attention of residents in Beechwood and across the city. Councillors are paid
a good allowance to represent their Ward's, and despite your Council Tax money paying them ..... Beechwood's Councillors are invisible to residents.
This is simply not good enough. Everyone finds the Council Tax a burden on their household income, yet despite another rise of almost 5% we continue
to see extremely poor value for money from Elected Councillors from the Labour led Council.
