Potholes Repair Strategy Failing Newport

The Cost of repairing potholes in Newport has risen from £330,671.41 in 2016/17 to £437,364.28 in 2017/18.

The figures were obtained via a freedom of information request (FOI) made by the Newport Conservative Group.

The FOI also revealed that in 2016/17 there were 17 claims for compensation received in respect of potholes costing the Council £878.70 - 4 of these claims still remain open. In 2017/18 the Council received 16 claims with £151.22 being paid out, however 14 of these claims are still ongoing.

Gaer & Maesglas Activist Lloyd Walsh who submitted the FOI said “I think the Council’s ‘patchwork quilt’ approach year-on-year is finally catching up with them, in terms of costs. Wouldn’t it be cheaper in the long-run to start properly tarmacing entire roads rather than continually infilling cracks and potholes?”

Mr Walsh added “The Gaer & Maesglas is particularly bad. It hasn’t helped that we’ve only had one official Community Ward Meeting in the last 5 years, on 18th October 2016. This is the Ward that Council Leader Debbie Wilcox allegedly represents. It’s disgraceful in my view”.

St.Julians Conservative Campaigner Michael Enea said “We’re seeing potholes all over Newport. The state of Beaufort Road outside St.Julians Primary School is horrendously bad. It keeps getting fed back to our local Councillors, but little is getting done”.
